To figure cost depletion, you must first determine the following. A corporation must reduce the amortizable basis of a pollution control facility by 20% before figuring the amortization deduction. If you retire or abandon the property during the amortization period, no amortization deduction is allowed in the year of retirement or abandonment. You can’t deduct any loss on the disposition or worthlessness of a section 197 intangible that you acquired in the same transaction (or series of related transactions) as other section 197 intangibles you still have. Instead, increase the adjusted basis of each remaining amortizable section 197 intangible by a proportionate part of the nondeductible loss.
You produce property if you construct, build, install, manufacture, develop, improve, create, raise, or grow it. Treat property produced for you under a contract as produced by you up to the amount you pay or incur for the property. However, the number of individuals you can treat as key persons is limited to the greater of the following. Because points are prepaid interest, you generally cannot deduct the full amount in the year paid. However, you can choose to fully deduct points in the year paid if you meet certain tests. If no interest or a low rate of interest is charged under the contract, a portion of the stated principal amount payable under the contract may be recharacterized as interest (unstated interest). The amount recharacterized as interest reduces your basis in the property and increases your interest expense.

Regular wages for workers are generally considered to be fixed costs, as while a company’s management can reduce the number of workers and paid work hours, it will always need a workforce of some size to function. Overtime payments are often considered to be variable costs, as the number of overtime hours that a company pays its workers will generally rise with increased production and drop with reduced production.
If the pay is excessive, the excess pay is disallowed as a deduction. If a partnership or S corporation carries on a not-for-profit activity, these limits apply at the partnership or S corporation level. They are reflected in the individual shareholder’s or partner’s distributive shares. If you do not carry on your business or investment activity to make a profit, you cannot use a loss from the activity to offset other income.

A company’s senior management tries to reduce operating expenses and utility costs by outsourcing areas of the business or allowing some of the existing staff to work from home. This cuts down on the actual physical space needed for staff at the office. Management also implements money-saving techniques such as automating parts of the business or reducing salaries for new hires.

Anti-churning rules prevent you from amortizing most section 197 intangibles if the transaction in which you acquired them didn’t result in a significant change in ownership or use. These rules apply to goodwill and going concern value, and to any other section 197 intangible that isn’t otherwise depreciable or amortizable. Computer software includes all programs designed to cause a computer to perform a desired function. It also includes any database or similar item that is in the public domain and is incidental to the operation of qualifying software.
In some cases, you may not be allowed to deduct the expense at all. Therefore, it is important to distinguish usual business expenses from expenses that include the following. Development costs also include depreciation on improvements used in the development of ores or minerals and costs incurred for you by a contractor. COGS can be difficult to calculate depending on the complexity of the business and what it sells. In the simplest of terms, COGS include the beginning inventory plus inventory purchases minus the ending inventory. This formula includes the cost of purchasing the items, inbound freight, manufacturing (including labor), modification and packaging. Operating costs are expenditures directly related to day-to-day business activities, excluding the processes involved in manufacturing a product or delivering a service. Examples include rent, travel, utilities, salaries, office supplies, maintenance and repairs, property taxes and depreciation (see below for a more comprehensive list). Whatever method you choose, the important thing is to be proactive about addressing inefficiencies.
